Descripción
The Tomintoul distillery, located in the Scottish Highlands in the Cairngorms National Park and named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, opened its doors in 1964 and is now owned by Angus Dundee Distillers.
At 370 meters above sea level, Tomintoul is the second highest distillery in Scotland, surpassed only by Braeval Distillery, which was founded in 1973. Although the majority of the 3.2 million liters of alcohol produced each year is exported to the United States for blends, Tomintoul continues to bring special single cask bottlings to the market.
Due to glacial movements, small mountain lakes, known as tarns, have developed in the Cairngorms, whose name is derived from the Old Norse word «tjorn» for pond. Tomintoul uses traditional methods that have been passed down through generations of master distillers to produce this fine whisky. The barley used to make the whisky is grown in the Speyside region and malted on site at the distillery. The whisky is distilled in copper pot stills before being matured in oak casks for at least 10 years.
